"As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, the principal focus of her interventions in the public arena is the protection and promotion of the dignity of the person, and she is thereby consciously drawing particular attention to principles which are not negotiable. Among these the following emerge clearly today:
- protection of life in all its stages, from the first moment of conception until natural death;
- recognition and promotion of the natural structure of the family - as a union between a man and a woman based on marriage - and its defence from attempts to make it juridically equivalent to radically different forms of union which in reality harm it and contribute to its destabilization, obscuring its particular character and its irreplaceable social role;
- the protection of the right of parents to educate their children."[Emphasis added.]
The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is a grave evil (CCC 2322) that can never be justified under any circumstance. Regardless of political positions on any other issue, a candidate who supports abortion cannot be considered by a "good Catholic". The abortion issue is "not negotiable". No matter how much we may agree with a politician on other issues, we cannot in good consciense vote for a candidate who supports abortion. The same can be said of the destruction of embryos for scientific research, or euthanizing the elderly or infirm. If there is no right to life, there can be no other rights. No other issue is as vital as the right to life from conception to natural death - not the economy, not war, not taxation. The right to life is fundamental to a civil society.
If you or anyone you know has had an abortion, the Catholic Church reaches out to you with hope and healing. Please visit Project Rachel (LINK) for more information.
